The alkaline diet emphasizes foods that are more alkaline than acidic to maintain an elevated pH level. Followers believe the diet promotes good health and weight loss, also and prevents heart disease and cancer.
Alkaline Foods
All fruits with the exception of plums, prunes and cranberries are allowed. Vegetables, especially dark green leafy varieties, are permitted as well. Dairy products such as cream, butter and milk are considered to have a neutral pH and may be included in the diet.
Foods to Avoid
Many protein-rich foods are excluded from the alkaline diet, including red meat, poultry, fish, shellfish and eggs. Most grain products, especially those derived from whole wheat, are also not permitted. Avoid processed foods and products with sugar, caffeine or alcohol.
Expert Insight
Though increasing dietary intake of fruits and vegetables is recommended for a healthy, balanced diet, there is a lack of evidence to support the reported benefits of the alkaline diet. According to Stephanie Vangsness, RD, LDN at Brigham and Women's Hospital, only test-tube studies have been conducted; findings are limited and cannot confidently be applied to humans.
