Diabetic Food Pyramid
Just as there is a food group pyramid for overall healthy eating, there is also a food group pyramid for individuals with diabetes. The healthiest foods are located at the bottom and are arranged by what is in them. Breads, grains and other starches are located at the very bottom of the pyramid. Directly above the foods with starches are fruits and vegetables. Above fruits and vegetables are dairy and meat products, and at the very top are fats, oils and sweets.
Starches
The healthiest foods for a diabetic are from the starch group. The starch group consists of whole grain breads and cereals, pasta, and starchy vegetables. These foods are full of fiber, complex carbohydrates, and essential minerals and vitamins. Starchy foods will also help you feel full longer. Feeling full longer will keep you from overeating, which is extremely important for a diabetic. Controlling weight is a key factor in controlling diabetes.
Vegetables
Vegetables are next in the list of healthy foods for diabetics. Vegetables also provide essential minerals, vitamins and fiber. You should eat three to four servings of vegetables a day. This serving range is based on your weight and your particular meal plan. You should ideally have a plan that will help you to control your glucose count on a daily basis.
Fruits
Fruits coexist with vegetables on the food pyramid. Fruits also provide a good source of minerals, vitamins, fiber and carbohydrates. You can consume three to four servings from this group a day based on your meal plan. The most important factor to note about fruits is that they do contain carbohydrates. It has been found that carbohydrates have an effect on blood sugar levels, and too many carbs can cause your blood sugar to rise. Fruits are an important part of any diet. As a diabetic, be aware of your total intake of carbohydrates.
Dairy and Meat
Dairy and proteins are next to the top of the food pyramid. When consuming dairy products, choose low-fat products such as skim milk and low-fat yogurt. Proteins will include lean meats such as chicken and pork, eggs, low-fat cheeses and fish. These foods will provide you with necessary vitamins, protein, calcium and essential minerals. These foods also contain carbohydrates and should be consumed in smaller portions.
Healthy Eating
Food that is high in fat and sugar content is not healthy for anyone. These foods are potentially dangerous for insulin-dependent diabetics. To enjoy treats, choose those that are sugar-free and fat-free. Eat treats only in moderation. Being diabetic does not mean that you cannot enjoy great-tasting meals.
