There is more than one diet plan which calls itself the Apple Diet, but the essence of all of them is the same: Eat more apples. This is not bad advice, as apples are good sources of a number of vitamins and nutrients, such as vitamin C. They may also help you to eat less. In a study conducted by the Obesity Society, people who ate apples 15 minutes before meals consumed approximately 190 fewer calories on average during the meal than people who did not.
3-Apple-a-Day Plan
The most well-known apple diet as of 2009 is Tammi Flynn's 3-Apple-a-Day Plan. Flynn, who is a registered dietician and nutritional director for Gold's Gym in Wenatchee, Washington, created a diet low in fat and high in fruits and vegetables. It contains plenty of protein and also includes foods low on the glycemic index (GI). The diet is similar to the South Beach diet, but with reduced saturated fat and including carbohydrates.
Flynn's plan asks that you consume an apple about fifteen minutes before a meal, three times a day. But it also makes recommendations as to what those meals should consist of and how often you should eat them. An apple before a meal of fried chicken and french fries is unlikely to do much good. The 3-Apple-a-Day Diet asks that you eat four or five small meals per day. Each meals should contain a serving of lean protein. You should also be sure to have six servings of fruits and vegetables each day in addition to your apples. Recommended foods overall are whole foods, fruits, low-fat dairy, vegetables and meats, such as cottage cheese, chicken breast, turkey, salmon, oatmeal and brown rice.
3-Day Apple Diet
Different, but in a similar vein, is the 3-Day Apple Diet. Unlike Flynn's plan, this is meant to be a short-term diet and not meant for ongoing weight loss or maintenance. Sponsored by the GreatHomeRemedies.Com website, the diet is also low in fat and full of whole fruits and vegetables. But there are not as many meals or servings as Flynn's plan, and the diet is higher in carbohydrates.
The diet is only meant to be followed for three days, with a promised weight loss of five pounds. Apples are included, but are usually part of the meals themselves and not taken beforehand. A sample breakfast consists of 1 slice of bread, a tablespoon of cottage cheese and three slices of apple. Lunch for one day is a fish salad made with 5 ounces of fish, one apple, one orange and five celery sticks. Dressing for the salad is the juice of one lemon and 2.5 ounces of low-fat yogurt. Dinner consists of two sandwiches made with rye bread. There are no recommendations as to what the put in the sandwich, except one must be covered with slices of apple and the other with slices of cucumber.
Warning
Remember, do not begin any diet without consulting with a doctor or medical professional.
