It is a myth that all vegans are thin and eat healthy. Vegans can have a diet as poor in nutrition and variety and as rich in wasted and excess calories as any average person. However, a few small changes can turn bad habits around and do away with extra pounds.
Go Raw
Eat foods in their most natural form. Doing so eliminates from consideration many of the processed foods which are calorie-dense and do not satiate hunger.
Raw and lightly cooked foods take longer to chew, forcing you to take the time to savor each bite more fully. The fiber and water content will lead you to feel full faster, for a longer period of time and after consuming far fewer calories.
Eliminate Sugar
Cut all sugar from your diet. Consumption of sugar often leads to the craving for more sugar as well as lows and highs in blood glucose levels, which can leave you feeling sapped of energy or lead to nervous snacking.
Satisfy the need for sweet flavors with ripe fruit, but avoid fruit juices. The fiber in whole fruit will help you to feel full for a longer period and aid in digestion. Fruit juice used to be dispensed only a few ounces at a time. A soda-sized bottle can be loaded with calories and trigger sweet cravings.
Drink More
Drink more water. If you must drink fruit juice, use water to dilute it. If you continue to drink soda or coffee, switch between the other beverage and a full glass of water. Drink water with your meals. You will conserve calories and the flavor of your food will be more robust when not in competition with the taste of the beverage.
While experts have backed away from some of the push for greater water consumption for hydration, water is still a simple way to keep your mouth busy and your stomach full without adding calories. Be aware that drinking extreme amounts of water can cause a potentially fatal imbalance in electrolytes.
Add Protein
Eat more beans, tofu, seitan and other forms of vegan alternative proteins. Vegans have an array of proteins to choose from which are filled with good fats yet are of moderate caloric content. Protein will lead to satiety, help build muscle and provide a lasting form of energy for exercise.
Most of the vegan proteins also contain vital nutrients. Satisfying basic nutritional requirements can provide the energy to get you motivated to be more active.
